Grimm Fairy Tales presents Realm War Age of Darkness #2 Review

Two issues in, how does this stack up to Unleashed? Read on to find out.

The official description from Zenescope:

The Age of Darkness continues as the evil Dark Queen and her husband rule over Earth.

Humanity is learning why she is called the Dark Queen. People are dying by the thousands, all for her pleasure. Meanwhile, the few humans and Realm Knights left to oppose her are scattered in the ruins of what was once New York City. But she will not rest until they are all dead or enslaved. And she has just the new weapon to aid her in her quest… the Child of Darkness.

GFT Realm War 2_Variant CoverI have to say that in the wake of Grimm Fairy Tales #100, the new landscape in this event has been outstanding. The idea that all the areas of this universe have been brought together with a great evil in control has crafted some interesting dynamics. And this creative team knows that as they continue to play in this second round.

Joe Brusha pens the script and one of the two men responsible for this line-up of books does a fine job taking our primary cast along this dire roller coaster. At this point the stakes feel wholly against Sela Mathers and her allies, which is exactly how this environment needs to be. And it’s within that atmosphere that we see glimpses of hope, as even villains tire of this Dark Queen. But there were bits of dialogue that felt overly corny to the point that it did take away from a few key moments within the text.

Even so when the art by Sami Kivela hits the page it’s clear that this talent was well suited for this role. Each panel is given enough room to breathe, especially as some shocking moments come to pass. It all happens within a narrative that keeps moving forward and we see some renditions formed as unlikely allegiances arrive. Add in the dynamic colors by Maxflan Araujo and the evil Dark Horde plus our beleaguered Knights have never looked better. To sum up: the visual component fits the saga unfolding before our eyes.

Grimm Fairy Tales presents Realm War Age of Darkness #2 is a really good continuation, as this chapter steadily builds on the legacy before it. There are a few off moments, but nothing that should prevent fans from buying and enjoying this outing. Recommended.
