Grimm Fairy Tales presents Realm War #3 Review

For fans: is this really something that’s worth paying attention to? Read on to find out.

The official description from Zenescope:

Age of Darkness

Sela recovers some of her remaining allies. Though it seems Robyn Locksley’s loyalty shifted to the Dark Horde. Meanwhile, Venus deviates from the Dark Queen’s plans in favor of her own personal gain. And what of the Dark One, who nears a breaking point with his Queen’s abuse? With so few friends left and these shifting alliances, Sela’s fate lies on uncertain ground.

GFT Realm War 3_Variant CoverThe mammoth arc that’s been years in the making barrels forward and you know what? It’s just awesome. The creative team from beginning to end understands their mandate as they place our heroes, and some of the villains, in real danger.

Joe Brusha pens the script and one of the original creators of Grimm Fairy Tales understands the unique situation all of this represents. As various creative teams prepped the road toward GFT #100, I doubt any fanboy or fangirl saw this merger coming. And the result is an era that reminds me of reality bending dramas of my youth, like Age of Apocalypse. But what sets this above other events is the fact that the author continually delivers to the point dialogue that pushes Sela and her allies along a twisted but fitting road.

Add in the visuals by Sami Kivela and the entire package is set to impress. From the first page to the final panel this talent carried a firm grasp on the expansive cast, which in any book like this can be a difficult obstacle to master. And so with each pencil stroke the illustrator made the right choices for the piece, especially when the colors by Maxflan Araujo came into play. In other words: the comic enjoys a display that exists in the light, as the team never overpowers the senses.

Grimm Fairy Tales presents Realm War #3 represents strong storytelling. There are a few off moments here and there, especially in regards to Hercules Payne, but not enough to detour the overall experience as this outing easily comes recommended.
