Grimm Fairy Tales Giant-Size 2014 Review

The road to #100 is here, but do we really need to pick this up? Read on to find out.

The official description from Zenescope:

Attacks against Highborns increase, and now Sela finds herself facing some of her oldest and most deadly foes. The Dark Horde clearly draws closer to their goal of domination over the realms. With her fellow Realm Knights off on another mission, Sela stands little chance against the Horde’s best. Have the realms already fallen into the Dark Queen’s hands?

GFT Giant-Size 2014_Variant CoverThings continue to fall apart as the Age of Darkness envelopes all the land with the villains now poised for their ultimate victory. Prisoners are taken, blood will be spilled and this creative team just lets it all happen because they’ve been building up this arc for years. So there’s no point in fighting what’s occurring, just accept it and enjoy this rollicking ride!

Joe Brusha and Ralph Tedesco work with script writer Pat Shand to pen an event that feels epic but kind of depressing at the same time. Key characters have fallen to the ruthlessness of the Horde and their corruption of HiboCorp (see Realm Knights: Age of Darkness) but even so the author doesn’t stop there as what remains of our heroes attempts to reorganize, as the Guardian of the Nexus faces odds that she’s not prepared for. The last time I was this excited for an arc was when Unleashed was getting underway, so go out and buy this.

The illustrations by Rolando Di Sessa and Joel Ojeda are unique and fast paced as the text calls for it. The renditions can be a bit spotty at times but overall I found their visualizations to be up to the task. Especially when Muchele Nucera and Kate Finnegan contributed via some dynamic colors. And so by the end I had only minimal complaints regarding this body of work.

Grimm Fairy Tales Giant Size 2014 is without a doubt essential reading. It’s not often that you see a company charge forward with a narrative that could challenge their norm but that’s what’s happening here. Highly recommended.
