THE GOON: OCCASION OF REVENGE #1 Review

The Goon is finally back on an ongoing basis. But will this new story be worthy of the characters within? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dark Horse:

In Eric Powell’s biggest story since 2008, what’s left of the Zombie Priest’s race of witches comes after the Goon, forcing him to face his nightmares or lose his town!

goonofr1p4What is the most common reason for Revenge? Love. Whether it be revenge for the person who broke your heart or for the evil person who killed your pet, to wanting payback for a broken possession love is usually the reason. It’s this concept that The Goon: Occasion of Revenge focuses on in this issue with a heartbroken man driven to suicide haunting his former lover.

Eric Powell always manages to captivate me with his scripts and especially when it comes to the Goon. The way that he manages to balance so many different tones along with the sheer suspense and drama is really something behold. As for this issue in particular bar the deep and emotional intro the fabulous Goon grittiness along with the humour and charm of the characters reminded me why I love this series so much. On a small irrelevant note I also loved how much like Hellboy (prior to Hellboy in Hell) Goon continues it’s original numbering within.

Besides being a great writer Powell has also always been a phenomenal artist with his storytelling ability known no bounds. From his sleek layouts to his striking inks Powell really manages to make things eye catching and along with the sheer detail and charm there’s tons to love. The way that he manages to work around the narrative focused start also proved captivating with the restricted panelling proving that less can be more. Rounding things off Powell also gives us fabulous washed out colours with the dark monotone look giving the tone that Goon’s known for.

The Goon is back and any Goon or Eric Powell fan needs The Goon: Occasion of Revenge. With an emotional start and a humour/action packed climax it delivers the kind of Goon goodness that we’ve been missing and easily gets a recommendation.
