Fables #142 Review

As Fables draws ever closer to it’s grand finale can it continue to be the spectacle that it’s been so far? Read on to find out.

The official description from Vertigo:

As the denizens of Fabletown choose sides, Snow White and Rose Red prepare for the battle of their lives. Part two of the epic “Happily Ever After” storyline continues here, featuring a backup story of Sinbad: The Last Story Ever Told, by Oz artist extraordinaire Eric Shanower.

FABL-142-2-286b1Fables sadly draws closer to it’s conclusion as Happily Ever After continues to enthral. Whilst the inevitable battle between Snow and Rose grows the Fables also learn of Bigby’s shocking return with his monstrous acts being a surprise to them. The suspense and drama from these developments along with Winter’s escapades really bring home the fact that there’s little time left and that the series is sure to end with a bang.

Bill Willingham never fails to amaze me with his writing of Fables as though like most series there are issues that aren’t as good as others it always proves enjoyable. As he pushes forward to finally closing this series he really seems to be producing enthralling stuff as though not the most exciting of tales (so far) the intrigue and suspense has been awesome. Willingham also manages to deliver a quick back-up story which proves fun and entertaining.

Mark Buckingham continues to play double duty as bar writing the last story arc for Fairest he continues to act as Fables main artist. And rightfully so as though his opening issue in Fairest proved captivating I’d be majorly disappointed if Fables ended without his art. The detailed pencils along with the lighthearted tone has been what has defined it’s look with the odd moment of brutality being awesome as well. We also get wonderful and fun art from Eric Shanower in the back-up tale.

Fables continues to be as awesome as ever and it will leave a massive hole come it’s finale. Highly recommended.

There is a typo in the final paragraph, I think you mean hole not whole but otherwise a great review.
