The official description from Image:

Comics’ most beloved homicidal cybernetic kung fu rooster returns for what we humbly anticipate as the most important literary achievement of the 21st Century. All other comics will be made irrelevant. The best thing that’s ever happened to comics, and possibly the best thing that’s ever happened… EVER! Plus: an all-star pin-up gallery from some of the most staggeringly talented artists in the industry! DO. NOT. MISS.

ChewWarriorChickenPoyo_Page4When it comes to naming Chew‘s most insane character only one comes to mind. Poyo. The beloved fan favourite has been a spectacular background character in Chew ever since his first appearance in Chew #8, with his evolution over the years being joyous to read. It is however fitting that for his latest solo outing be a rip roaring tale of excitement and insanity.

John Layman has been a writer whose work I’ve admired for a few years now, but it doesn’t seem to matter how good his other work is Chew always seems to excel. As this issue focuses on Poyo (and having missed his only other solo outing Chew: Secret Agent Poyo) I was really intrigued to see how it’d differ from the norm. It turned out to do so in many ways, as despite retaining the humour and charm that makes Chew so enjoyable it proved to be much wackier. This however isn’t a bad thing, as considering the character I’d be disappointed otherwise.

Rob Guillory always seems to astound me with his wonderful art, as it doesn’t matter what Chew character he’s focusing on they always seem to amaze. The energetic flow of his art really gives the dynamic edge that has defined Chew, and along with the charming overtones he produces it really enhances the fun and humour that is already president in the script. In addition to this the bold palette that he has refined throughout the course of the series really gives that extra punch to the final article.

Poyo is one badass chicken, and this one-shot just goes to show how so. Mixed with humour and wacky magical antics Chew: Warrior Chicken Poyo sees our bied hero go to any lengths to get the job done, with the last page appearance being fantastic. Highly recommended.
