Axe Cop: American Choppers #1 Review

Axe Cop is back and this time he’s putting together a team. After this first issue you’ll want to join too!

President of the World Axe Cop reunites with Super Axe, an old friend from college, and the two of them decide to start a superteam of axe-wielding heroes to defend America, called the American Choppers. They are joined by Captain Axe, Axe Girl, Axe Woman, Axe Dog, and other axe-wielding heroes. The only problem is that there are no bad guys left, but that all changes when mysterious giant creatures attack the city!

Malachai Nicolle and his brother Ethan are serving up a new dose of Axe Cop and it’s just as much fun as always. Axe Cop: American Choppers is full of, what else, axes and chopping evil heads off and really what else do you need? This new series is as outlandish, fun and off the wall as anything that’s come before. If there’s a complaint to be had it’s that it can be a bit repetitive but that’s the worst anyone can say. Axe Cop is what it is and Malachai’s imagination and his brother Ethan’s art still brings all the fun and joy comics should have.

The story kicks off with Axe Cop giving the presidency over to his wife because he needs to get back to the business of chopping. The villains are Food Force Three, who grow to five, back to three, who actually used to be six! After the first battle Super Axe, Captain Axe and Axe Cop work so well together to defect evil that they form the American Choppers. They make an open call for auditions on YouTube and invite Axe Girl, Axe Woman, Axe Dog and the best new character of all Axe Goat to join the team.

Sure it’s silly but that’s what makes it a great comic. The joke may wear thin at times but Malachai has brought some great nuances between characters to break up the fun and action. Ethan’s art is still a joy to behold as he captures the fun and spirit of his younger brother’s stories. If you like Axe Cop already you won’t be disappointed and if you are new to the party this is a great time to jump in. Axe Cop: American Choppers is flat-out fun and entertaining! There needs to be more comics like this.
