2000AD #1887 Review

2000ad-1887Only for titles this week, but 2000AD #1887 still aims to pack a punch. This week it’s Judge Dredd, Time Twisters, Indigo Prime and Grey Area. Let’s take a closer look at each.

First up is Judge Dredd. At first, this issue feels like an excuse to let Nick Percival’s artwork do most the talking, but the latter half of Michael Carroll’s script picks up the pace and offers enough to sustain interest. It’s not a bad read, but it’s very much like last week’s Dredd and does little to break into new territory.

Secondly we have a Time Twisters one-shot. Rob Williams offers a novel take on the age-old ‘time travel and kill Hitler’ dynamic. It’s interesting, well written and full of humor. Alongside this is Simon Gurr’s striking artwork, which takes creative leaps in its style to keep the artwork fresh. Definitely worth a read.

Next is the end of Indigo Prime. John Smith’s ending is a bit out of the blue yet, at the same time, it’s a riveting read that’s hard to put down. I don’t care that it doesn’t always make sense, that’s part of Indigo Prime’s point. Still, there is a certain plot at work that keeps everything more or less coherent and the ending is a satisfying surprise. I’ll miss Lee Carter’s amazing artwork, however.

Finally, we have more Grey Area. Dan Abnett offers plenty of excitement, although the script is full of suspense more than action. Still, it ties into the larger story, keeps interest throughout and comes with some vibrant, stunning artwork courtesy of Mark Harrison: Harrison’s style really helps to portray the epic nature of Abnett’s work.
