Red Sonja: Atlantis Rises #4 Review

The end of this mini-series is here, but does it deliver a successful finale that’s worthy of your time?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

It’s time for the main event! Red Sonja and Thulsa Doom collide and the fate of Atlantis and Hyborea hangs in the balance. Can Sonja close the pandora’s box that Thulsa has opened, or will Doom spread the power of the dreaming God across the waters and the lands beyond!

This is a moment fans of the ‘She-Devil with the Sword‘ have dealt with before, a pivotal confrontation (yet again) with Thulsa Doom.  Our heroine journeyed far in a short amount of time to take on her nemesis, the wroth of a god and a once dormant civilization, but now the time has come for some final twists and turns as this ancient romp comes to a fitting conclusion.

Luke Lieberman does an excellent job wrapping up this saga with this final outing.  He uses the first three issues to properly prop up this script in order to fully justify the chaotic but logical series of events that unfold.  The dialogue is quick and to the point but there are moments where it comes off as a bit too wonky, which can be somewhat forgivable especially considering the subject matter.  But from beginning to end this is a jaunt that’s all about our hero, Red Sonja, and even as it delivers quite a few helpings of camp it spices things up a bit with some decent twists and turns.

Max Dunbar does a find job on the art in this epic climax.  He successfully brings forth some very captivating action sequences that make use of his quirky and unique design sense.  But there were a few moments where character deformities and awkwardly handled pencil stokes yield some bland visualizations.  Overall though the work on display matched the quality of the script blow for blow.

Red Sonja: Atlantis Rises #4 is the best release in this mini-series, as it successfully represents the core elements of this storied property.  Recommended.
