Red Sonja #78 Review

The vampire narrative born from the pages of Prophecy continues here, but should fans even care how all this ends for the she-devil with a sword?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

“The Crimson Well” Part 3 (of 6) – Secret plans are revealed, and the tables begin turning…but Sonja and her allies may have woefully underestimated the Dark Prince. Blood and steel will play a part, as they always do, but this issue’s real battle will be won by the warrior with the strongest will.

As the battle against Dracula begins in earnest the heart and soul of our heroine lays in the balance, as she and her cohorts face their fears and take on an army in a dusky town.  The creative team has seen fit to make the final arc of this volume both compelling and over the top in the most devilishly addicting ways possible.

Brandon Jerwa pens the script and once again I found myself completely enthralled by the authors ability to spin an outlandish tale while keeping the core mechanics of the franchise alive and kicking. Whether you came here looking for something that continued an event or filled in the time before the new volume of this franchise begins there’s plenty to enjoy here.  That being said, there were quite a few moments where the dialogue came off as too wordy and even corny much to the narrative’s detriment.

The art by Sergio Fernandez Davila is engrossing as the talent pierced the veil to bring forth a dynamic look that suits the book in all the right ways.  From the first page to the last panel he successfully illustrates a version of the world that’s as inviting as it is born for the terrors and horrors therein.  In particular I was jazzed by how he was able to take two drastically different properties and blend them together seamlessly into a believable and wholly organic experience despite a few minor hiccups.

Red Sonja #78 is another solid entry that continues the march toward the assured conclusion of this zany but nonetheless entertaining arc. Recommended.
