Red Sonja #75 Review

As this latest arc draws to a close, does this story of the she-devil with a sword still warrant your attention?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

On the snowy steppes of Hyrkania, Red Sonja faces off against an army bent on crushing her homeland. Old scores are settled, alliances are broken, and rest assured, with the She-Devil With A Sword entering the fray, blood will surely flow.

There have been many characters who have found themselves in the precarious situation of having an invading army at their backside, but after this issue I have to say none have handled the situation and its many twists then turns as Red Sonja has.  She held fast and kept her wits about her as she slowly and methodically did what need to be done in order to win the day.

Eric Trautman penned the script and the series author focused strongly on what can only be described as our main character’s primary features. He wrote a tale that revisited old plot lines as it lead to a welcome conclusion and despite a very unnecessary twist near the end it was more than solid.  But to be frank that final revelation and villain connection felt rather unnecessary and dare I say tacked on to an already complete story.  More or less it cheapened the ultimate climax.

The art by Marcio Abreu complemented the script perfectly as the seasoned talent lavished each page and panel with a level of detail that offered nothing less than true depth.  Whether it was a battle or a slower scene remarking on the carnage, the thick and thin lines found a way to allow the soul of this jaunt to fly freely.  There were a couple moments where features, due to the subject matter, came off over exaggerated to the point that they became a bit of an eyesore.

Red Sonja #75 is certainly a solid conclusion to the arc but the final bumps in the road left a bit of a bad after taste, resulting in this book getting a passable but light recommendation.
