Red Sonja #70 Review

Blades will clash as this brief arc comes to a decisive end, but is it really worth your time?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Witness the thrilling conclusion of Red Sonja’s battle alongside a kingdom’s most legendary swordsman, against an ancient creature of limitless eldritch and physical power! To the death!

Who knew that the seemingly random encounter with a dragon and an even more off chance arrival in the country of Khitai would result in an epic journey full of blood and monsters?  I guess if you were astute, you could have guessed it.  But either way that doesn’t really matter because what we have here is an entertaining book from start to finish.

Eric Trautman continues his work on the series by delivering a fast moving story that allows the action, for the most part, to work itself out unhindered by unnecessary tangents.  His script does a fine job balancing out its information and dialogue in a way that allows the fast paced battle to not only be center stage but the proverbial driving force behind this jaunt.  That said, there were several key moments where the narration just felt too meaty as it lost me in explanations that honestly felt pointless to the overall saga.

Marcio Abreu handles the art and he does a good job handling some lavishly intricate battle sequences.  His panel designs lend a striking visual style that keeps the story alive with a kinetic energy imbued into each and every pencil stroke.  There are moments where details find themselves to be rather lacking, while there are also more than a couple shots that show off our hero’s assets a bit too much.  But overall this was a very solid discernible comic book that kept the story entertaining throughout.

Red Sonja #70 is a very good read that does have it’s share of narrative and artistic faults, but the overall fun factor contained in this romp more than earns a recommendation.
