Red Sonja #1 Review

Did this property really need a relaunch?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

THIS IS IT. Red Sonja gets a fresh new attitude by the dream team of writer GAIL SIMONE (Batgirl, Birds of Prey) and artist WALTER GEOVANI (Prophecy, Witchblade), on the book they were born to create. Sonja pays back a blood debt owed to the one man who has gained her respect, even if it means leading a doomed army to their certain deaths!

This thrilling new series features covers by the top female artists in the industry, including Nicola Scott, Colleen Doran, Jenny Frison, Fiona Staples, Amanda Conner and more. You do NOT want to miss this re-introduction the She-devil with a Sword!

Red Sonja has had some interesting moments in her comic book career but this has got to be the first one where a creative team has given history and proper introduction to a true antagonist in one brief issue.  It’s certainly something to marvel at, even as the release reaches its climax.

Gail Simone pens the script and the renowned author does a spectacular job reinvigorating the world of the she-devil with a sword.  The scribe puts our heroine’s personality right in the center of an affair that might just see a kingdom fall because of actions of mercy that their leader took long ago.  I can’t say enough how impressed I was by the overall package, but there were a few instances where I felt that the pace was rushed along but trust me the payoff at the end did not feel cheapened by it.

The art by Walter Geovani is absolutely spectacular to behold.  Whether the illustrator is drawing a simple attack between a drunk and thieves or the beginnings of a widespread bloody conflict he’s more than up to the challenge. Some of the panels seemed to be far too static for their own good but these moments were few and far between.

Red Sonja #1 is an excellent entry that proves that the well of ideas behind the franchise has not yet run dry.  Highly recommended.
