Rebel Blood #2 Review

There are three types of comics. There’s the kid friendly Marvel Adventures, the more mature Batman, and the adult MAX comics. Rebel Blood is somewhere between the latter two. Image has once again done it. I opened this issue to find this guy getting attacked by these zombie people that could talk English. Horror? Slightly humorous? Giant rats? Rebel Blood #2 has all that, and then some.

The official description from Image:

A mysterious infection is sweeping the land turning animals and people into blood-crazed killers! The food supply is dwindling…and you’re on the menu! How bad can things get? You’re about to find out!

The story’s main character is Chuck. Pretty much your ordinary guy, but won’t hesitate to beat on some zombies. The character that stole the show was Danny. You can tell that the writer was having a blast with him, the writing there is brilliant. (“C’mon now Chuck, you really gonna shoot an unarmed man?” He’s saying this while holding an unattached arm. Good stuff man, good stuff.) The tone is dark, but at the same time it doesn’t try to make you scared. In fact, you’ll probably be smiling the whole way through of how ridiculous, yet great the story is. And how can one not forget the giant rats? Random, yes, but I had a blast the whole way through.

The art isn’t very dynamic, but it fits the tone and atmosphere. There’s a great graphic novel called Black Fire over from Archaia, the art and tone is very similar to that book. This kind of art really makes the zombies/creatures all the more creepy. This issue packs a lot of great content for just $2.99.

Overall, Rebel Blood #2 is a great comic separating itself from this week’s releases. Horrific but fun? Yes. Did I mention that it has giant rats?
