Quantum & Woody #6 Review

One thing that has always bothered me about being a critic for comics is when I have nothing good or bad to say about a comic. Apathy is a killer for writing reviews. Fortunately I don’t have that problem with Quantum & Woody. I could literally do a review in one sentence for this book. Simply put, it’s great! But that would be a disservice to you the reader so I will expound on why this is such a great title.

Official Description from VALIANT:
Bravely laying their lives on the line! (Unwittingly to uphold the ideals of a multi-billion-dollar private security corporation) Quantum and Woody have blundered into a suicide mission! And if they make it out alive, it only means a whole new world of trouble for our dyadic duo!!

OK, I may have exaggerated in the beginning because I don’t think there is much grey area to be had with Quantum & Woody. You either love it or you hate it. Some may find the humor off putting or silly but for those who love it, like myself, I find the humor fun, smart and full of charm. One thing I can not stand when it comes to a comic is not knowing what it wants to be. Writer James Asmus don’t have that problem. He understands what Quantum & Woody is and he runs with it full force, no apologies. Even if you are someone who dislikes this book you cannot deny it has an identity and sticks to it. For fans that is a true gift to us and should be embraced the same way Asmus embraces these characters.

QW_006_COVER300pxCase and point; the book opens with Eric returning home and Woody, his new girlfriend and Vincent the goat in clown make-up. Tell me why that’s not funny! Also, for the first time in the series we actually see Eric (Quantum), happy and it throws Woody off his game which is a rare site to see. These brothers have witty, quick banter and even though Eric feels as though he gets to use his superpowers on his own there is always the nagging bond of the brothers bracelets that must “klang” every 24 hours so their atoms don’t get torn apart. They are a package deal, like it or not. And honestly how could you not?

Their current mission is to take on a anti-government group who are stockpiling weapons who Quantum must take on alone at first. Asmus also uses this opportunity for Woody to show his worth as he discovers the true plan and why it’s all unfolding. Which is a very roundabout way to save his brother but at least an attempt which is more than we’ve gotten from Woody this whole series. Quantum must improvise, which is really what this series does best, and in the meantime stumbles into more than he anticipated or was prepared to handle.

Ming Doyle’s art is so full of expression and energy that not only the comedy but the action just comes to life. One thing that serves this book well is expressive faces and actions and Doyle handles that task flawlessly. Her art lends as much to the life of this book as Asmus’ writing. It’s as much fun to read as it is fun to look at.

Quantum & Woody is funny but full of fun in other ways, charming with all the heart, and simply put, a great witty comic full of energy and excitement. There’s plenty to love here and it hits all the right notes for a action comedy superhero book. There aren’t many like Quantum & Woody on the store shelves and you most certainly shouldn’t pass this book up.
