Prophet #24 Review

There are many comics out there. Therefore, it’s hard to find anything truly original. Image is good with that however, they provide new and original stories not seen in other companies. Prophet is one of them. This issue being the start of a new arc, I thought it was the perfect time to jump into the series. What I read is by far one of the more interesting and ‘isolated Mass Effect‘ feel ones. The only real drawback is that it’s not too new reader friendly.

The official description from Image:

John Prophet’s mission has been changed. He now has to cross the continent sized starship of Sleepingman to save a creature who has crashed onto the world below. He must survive deadly radiation and a strangely familiar thing that’s been trapped in the ship.

Sci fi fans will have a blast with this one. It feels ‘desolate,’ like Metroid. Here we have John Prophet, our main character, a good focus. Then we have this mysterious ‘girl. Writer Brandon Graham succeeds in giving her a mysterious persona. (With an even more intriguing plot twist regarding her.) The backgrounds also compliment the issue, it just feels dark and gritty. That makes sense with all the creepy creature designs. (That rat looked like something out of Food of the Gods.) The highlight of the story is the confrontation between John and his grotesque duplicate. How it got there wasn’t explained, but it was still a cool fight. The whole concept of that was executed wonderfully.

The art is pretty good. Not great, (some scenes with the ‘girl’ looked way too simple) but it does succeed in giving off a sense of creepiness, especially the creature designs. (John’s duplicate looks like an even uglier version of Mr. Hyde.) Like I said earlier, the only real drawback to the issue is how confusing it is. Every start to a new arc in any comic must be new reader friendly. Unfortunately, this comic was too confusing for someone to jump in. A longtime reader would probably rank it higher, but this review is from the perspective of a new reader.

Overall, Prophet #24 is an interesting science fiction story. It has some great writing and creepy creature designs. Unfortunately, it’s a bit confusing for a new reader to jump in.
