Prophecy #3 Review

Does this event book succeed in bringing the world to its knees?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

The battle for Earth’s survival continues! Mankind must depend upon champions including Red Sonja, Vampirella, Dracula, Pantha, Herbert West the Reanimator and Athena to stand against sorcerer Kulan Gath and his doomsday gods! Will our heroes have to sacrifice themselves in order to save the world? Only the all-star team of writer Ron Marz and artist Walter Geovani know for sure! “9 out of 10” — Newsarama.

The end of the world continues in the action-packed third entry in this zany crossover event, but can these unlikely allies do anything to thwart the coming apocalypse?  Well fans, this is the issue where we find out.  And not only does the answer make sense but it perfectly sets up the rest of this epic series.

Ron Marz offers-up a script that’s truly a fun read, that will keep fans of any of these storied franchises glued from the moment they open the book.  There are only two real gripes that I had with this little romp.  The first being that there are moments where overly corny dialogue pushes already established story points and secondly, this issue carried a rather brisk pace that just did not leave enough room for any sort of depth.

Walter Geovani simply astounds with dynamic and detailed panel work that informs a lightly written script.  Sleek but tender lines yield perfectly formed characters and exquisite backgrounds that simply elevate the already established quality of the series.  Perpetuating a brisk pace, the talented artist makes sure that each one of his pencil strokes counts as it informs the action in a way that is nothing short of  engaging.

Prophecy #3 is a continuation of an already stellar event, that shows off quality storytelling and dynamic art even as it sacrifices some depth to accomplish its ends.  Recommended.
