Oddly Normal #1 Review

It’s a story about a girl who is different and has crazy parents, but does it need a read? Read on to find out more.

Oddly inherited her pointed ears and emerald hair color from her mother, who hails from a magical land called Fignation, and as you can imagine, this makes fitting in at a school full of mortals challenging to say the least.

On her tenth birthday, feeling misunderstood and alone, Oddly makes a disastrous wish over the candles of her birthday cake and her parents vanish from existence. Now, with the aid of her great aunt, Oddly must travel to Fignation to live under Auntie’s care while the elder witch works to uncover the mystery of their disappearance.

Oddly Normal is a very interesting comic book. I say this because I am not sure if I like it or if IOddlyNormal-e6591 don’, which is something that I have never had happen. The story of Oddly comes to us very quickly with a narrative telling us about how cruel kids can be and a backstory about Oddly. It is very interesting but, also, very slow. It never gets happy but stays monotone. I will say, overall, it is very interesting but I actually didn’t like the main character. The character is kind of shellfish and very angry but no in a compelling way. I didn’t feel any apathy for her and her life, especially because her whole thing is that her parents are awful but really they seem quite nice and are just trying to be parents. I kind of feel that the writer, Otis Frampton, could have made her a little more likable or at least show us something but he doesn’t, so it makes it hard to like the character.

Otis Frampton does double duty with writing and art. The art is very well done, it is quirky and cute, while giving us a vast world of interesting things to look at.  I think that this might be the saving grace of the issue.

Oddly Normal is a mess of an unlikable character and shotty story points.
