Noir 2014 Banner

Can this crossover make something of itself? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

In the Labyrinth of the Templars, The Black Sparrow and Miss Fury follow the deranged villains Orlando and Minerva on a trail of a lost treasure. Along the way, they dodge traps and pitfalls and learn of the Templar connection to the Mohawk Tribe. Will the ladies be forced to join forces with the bad guys to attain their goal, or will one stab the other in the back at the first opportunity. Blazing guns, snapping bullwhips and the looming shroud of betrayal await you in the next issue of Noir.

Noir 4_CBehold the might of two characters meeting up and causing mayhem in a single series. It’s a portion of the industry that’s existed for decades, but let’s be frank my fellow fanboys and fangirls: we all love it. The idea of a shared space where you can turn the page and see two icons in one book is an attractive prospect. And the creative team capitalizes on that fact as the hour for this mini-series grows late.

It’s the quirky and fun script by Victor Gischler that makes this whole thing not just digestible but downright fun. The author pens an adventure book that feels naturally evolved, even as some sequences came off a wee bit rushed. In truth the key component to these festivities is the dialogue, and thankfully this is one scribe that gets the charisma of each heroine and uses that to his advantage. The end result: is an engaging piece of literature that will entertain.

The consistent hand of Andrea Mutti does wonders for both of our prominent main characters, and minus some inconsistent moments I found myself enamored with his style. He captures the essence of kinetic flow, which at times leads to some facial or bodily distortions. But the end result is a visual component that yields a far less static flow. To put it bluntly: enjoy the detailed pictures but keep moving forward.

Noir #4 proves its mantle under the weight of its penultimate status. Recommended.
