New Avengers #6 Review

The Illuminati have learned the reason for the Incursions, as well as the origins of the enigmatic Black Swan. Agreeing to help the heroes, Black Swan tells them of a way to halt the Incursions. They have little time to prepare however as the next incursion is only minutes away…and it source is Latveria.

Here is the summary from Marvel:

Using the knowledge gained from the Black Swan, the Illuminati rework all their plans and cross the uncrossable line. The first secret alliance is formed. If an incursion is normally RED, what does a BLUE one mean?

With time of the essence, the Illuminati & Black Swan head to Latveria in order to stop the latest incursion. However to Black Swan’s horror the sky about the incursion is blue instead of it’s normal red. Not fully understanding what the blue sky means, Black Swan leads the Illuminati to the parallel Earth to observe for themselves. When the group arrives, they find the world completely barren, devoid of all life & as such make a decision that will weigh on them for years to come.

Jonathan Hickman is still playing the long game with this book, but as usual he manages to make it work. We are introduced Sidera Miras & the Map Makers. The Map Makers essentially eliminate worlds of all life during incursions and send a peice of the planet they wasted to the planet it was colliding with, destroying the old planet while the chunk becomes a beacon for the next planet the consume. It’s all a bit confusing and overwhelming but hey variety is always nice. We also get to see Dr. Doom (who I refer to as the Kanye West of comics) and his son Kristoff Vernand as they fight off the makers. They don’t do too much within, but they do have a moment at the end that will surely set up some interesting suff.

We also get some more development of character in this issue. Black Panther still lamenting and angsting over what must be done to save the planet, the groups uneasiness with cooperating with Black Swan (except for Reed who claims the need her), and Beast’s slight uneasiness with being in the Illuminati as a whole. This leads to interesting conversations between the group (Namor once again being a boss) and Black Swan having a conversation with the captured Alternate Terrax.

Steve Epting’s art is impressive as usual, and the Makers themselves look pretty intimidating; especially when their swarming Doom’s castle. The last page with Doom being pretty menacing and ominous.

New Avengers #6 is a pretty well written issue. While the Maker stuff is a bit confusing, the dialogue flows well and the art is still consistent. We even get a small call back to Hickman’s Avengers series which is warranted as the series will eventually collide due to Marvel’s upcoming Infinity event.
