MR. PEABODY & SHERMAN #1 Review

Mr. Peabody & Sherman Banner

Oh nostalgia! A winning combination of both smart and funny!

The official description from IDW:

A dog — and his boy?! Join the classic Jay Ward characters, the world’s smartest individual who happens to be a dog, Mr. Peabody, and his son Sherman, on their maiden voyage in the time-traveling WABAC machine and other adventures exploring history.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman 1_CMr. Peabody & Sherman created by Ted Key, was originally a segment called “Peabody’s Improbable History” on the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. Now, it’s due to be animated film but first it’s brought back to life in comic form.

The premise is simple, after the many accomplishments of Mr. Peabody; a noble prize, an Olympic metal and two PhD’s he’s ready for the next big step in his life… becoming a father, Oh did I mention he’s a freaking dog! He soon realizes that being a parent will be his hardest task yet and dose what any responsible individual would do in his situation. He builds a time machine for his son Sherman.

This leads to some pretty hilarious moments like when Peabody is designing how he’d like the time machine to be modeled and rejects a filmier looking phone booth calling it “too British”.The end result was the ‘WABAC’ machine sending our father and son duo though time and space! Written by Scholly Fisch who caters well to a young audience, while succeeding in making the comic not only funny but smart.

The art by Jorge Monlongo is also notably good. The original was janky in a School House Rock kind of way, which was good for its time, but today it could honestly use a little face-lift. Without making it too powder puffy Monlongo dose an excellent job of bringing together a modern look with a classic favorite.

This comic is genuinely funny and whether you’re picking it up or the first time or re-introducing yourself for a nostalgia fix you wont be disappointed by Mr. Peabody & Sherman #1.
