Morning Glories #31 Review

Does the latest romp shed any light on the mysteries surrounding this very disturbing academy?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Image:

Say goodbye.

Mind officially blown, after closing the final page of this journey into a sordid paradise full of terrors I was pleasantly surprised to find a fairly straight forward character journey.  The creative team makes use of some choice players as they methodically deal with loss while building believable extensions and new potential friendships.  In short: this release represents the very essence of solid storytelling.

Nick Spencer, what can I say about this script other than the one word that describes it: wow.  The author has outdone himself by taking his highly complicated and more than a little bit convoluted yarn and turned it into an easy to follow interlude that illuminates the best features within this franchise.  Hunter’s journey to piece together his poem as he discovers potential alliances, that might one day prove to be endlessly essential, turned out to be quite compelling.  Specifically the scribe blew me away when I reached that confusing cliffhanger.

The art by Joe Eisma is just as delicately handled and beautifully realized as it’s always been.  To the talent’s credit from the first panel to the final page I was most assuredly hooked by his designs.  A slow but planned outing yields very little in the realm of excitement, but the illustrator still finds the wherewithal to birth some complex and moving imagery.  In short: this is some of his best work to date, but truth be told his skills have grown so much that he really didn’t have to push too hard to accomplish that.

Morning Glories #31 hits it out of the park for me.  Sure it’d be easy to complain about the fact that all this issue did was raise more questions but I can’t shake the feeling that a lot was revealed here and we just don’t understand it yet.  For that reason and the excellent cliffhanger I have no choice but to give the grade this comic book absolutely deserves.  Highly recommended.
