“A New Assignment.”

There’s no other way to explain this than to simply start out this review with an honest to goodness realization of this franchise: I’m impressed with it. Month in and month out I ‘m more than hooked by each passing page, a I find myself absorbed by the deepening layers within its walls.  The reason for that stems directly from the hard work of the creative team which has, without a doubt, crafted something that’s truly worthwhile.

The script penned by series scribe, Nick Spencer, is busting at the seams with resolutions and unexpected revelations that line the road of this complex jaunt. The author makes perfect use of his players as he expands their roles and unveils some wrinkles while smartly relying on the established tropes to carry both them and their audience to an interesting finish. There are some missteps with the dialogue along the way that slightly take away from this outing, but truth be told these minor stumbles did little to lessen the impact of some very important sequences just before the climax.

I cannot begin to properly explain how much I enjoy the art by Joe Eisma in this series, but I will try.  His stiff but solid designs handily craft and create a versatile experience that perfectly suits the written word in all the best possible ways.  Like the text at play here the illustrator finds a way to make these outlandish and over the top situations seem familiar enough to make the bulk of this adventure work as eager fanboys and fangirls are left with something that’s sure to leave them counting the days until the next issue arrives.

Morning Glories #29 is an excellent comic book that only bares some slight scuffs and bruises as it carries the property forward, toward wherever this saga of life lessons, torture, school and abuse leads our young heroes.  Highly recommended.
