Mind the Gap #10 Review

EVERYONE IS A SUSPECT. NO ONE IS INNOCENT!

Mind the Gap enters double digits with this very revealing issue. Does this soap opera-filled issue deliver the stuff the description promises? If you’ve been reading this far, this is definitely the big payoff issue.

Here’s the official description from Image:

“WISH YOU WERE HERE,” Part Five
Life. Death. Rebirth. All of this and more await Elle when she faces her newest challenge. And it wouldn’t be the conclusion of an arc without twists, turns, shocks, and revelations! A new memory leads Elle to turn on one of her “allies”, and finally – HOODIE IS REVEALED! And no one will be prepared for what happens when they find out who it is!

It’s been quite a bit since we’ve last seen Elle and her trippy paranormal adventures. This issue promises revelations, and it delivers them. A complaint is that sometimes it feels the story is being dragged on. Thankfully and surprisingly, (cause a lot soap operas are dragged on) the story doesn’t get slow too often. Now with this issue, we finally realize nearly everything and the deeper plan. It’s definitely an issue you might have to read a second time to fully grasp everything.

Jim McCann in just ten issues has crafted a very expansive story featuring very different people. Elle has gone from being totally clueless to Sigourney Weaver heroine, taking charge. It’s great to see her confident and actually taking control of her surrounding. It shows how much character development she has gone through in these past 10 issues. The dialogue between her and Crenshaw is one of the best yet. Of course, obviously the biggest thing about the issue is realizing the bigger picture and seeing who Hoodie is. It’s hard to talk about it and not spoil something, so I will say this…it’s truly interesting stuff. Granted, it’s also some of the most confusing stuff I’ve ever read in a comic, you have to really be invested in story to grasp everything being said. (Basically, not new reader friendly.) It is interesting to see just how big the story is becoming, you’re going to be surprised.

Rodin Esquejo’s art is great throughout. There’s not much to say since the previous reviews have said the same thing, it looks good. The facial expressions on the characters are well done, and the occasional splash page is welcome. The main cover is pretty solid, having Hoodie coming into Elle’s room. It gets the job done. The other cover is a slightly more depressing one. They both have the right atmosphere.

Overall, this issue is without a doubt the biggest one since #1. Things are revealed, it’s the payoff. It is rather difficult to keep up with it all, so be prepared for investment. It’ll be interesting to go back and see all the clues leading up to this. Mind the Gap just became bigger in scope, not bad for a soap opera comic.
