Michael Turner’s Soulfire (vol.4) #5 Review

There’s destruction around the world, as the terrors of Chaos are unleashed.  But is there still enough of a spark to make this magical tale truly worthwhile?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Aspen:

Michael Turner’s epic fantasy adventure surges forward into a bold new era!

Malikai and his friends attempt to survive and defeat the onslaught of a deadly horde of destructive dragons. Meanwhile, the magical races of the Everlands might have to resort to the unthinkable in order to defeat them-the fusing of magic…with technology!

This series has proven its resiliency and emotional impact as it dances between the fields of both technology and magic. But now with one of the main characters possessed by a villain the creative team is ready to sink their teeth into this proverbial fray and potentially offer up a sacrifice or two in the process.

J.T. Krul pens the script as he uses his literary prowess to illuminate the dark road our heroes are now traversing, as a union between both technology and magic may lead to ethical quandaries that haven’t even been considered yet.  The dialogue from the first page to the finale is paramount in its importance as the seasoned scribe allows emotions to flow freely in these heightened times.  If I was to levy a complaint it’s that the second half of the story seems to happen far too briskly and when we reach the climax it just felt a bit too sudden.

For this issue we have Giuseppe Cafaro and Mike DeBalfo on art duties and might I say the duo indeed works together to illustrate this adventure in the most positive sense.  Each line, both thick and thin, highlights unique features and delicate details that echo back to the work done by the late great Michael Turner.  I was thoroughly impressed with the overall package and I can’t wait to see how the visuals look in the next sterling release.

Michael Turner’s Soulfire (vol.4) #4 is a another excellent outing that proves once again that there’s plenty more juice left within this franchise.  Recommended.
