MARVEL Announces SECRET WARS for 2015

The big news coming out of NYCC yesterday was the announcement of the 2015 Marvel Comics event. It seems that they’re taking us back a bit with an all new Secret Wars.

Thrity years ago the first story line was a huge multi-crossover book involving major superheroes and villains in a battle on a distant planet at the behest of The Beyonder.

Starting in May next year, writer Jonathon Hickman and penciller Esad Ribic will be the creative team for a year long arc.

The story is set to commence with the conclusion of the current Avengers and  New Avengers arc ‘Time Runs Out.’

Publisher Dan Buckley stated during the announcement that this is a story-line that Hickman has been planning since he started his run on Avengers back in 2012.

We’ve been sitting on this for a very long time. When Jonathan [Hickman] brought this to us, we had an opportunity to just not celebrate this in publishing, so we’re going to be extending this in a year-long program into 2016 with our merchandising partners, digital partners and other partners.

The size and scale of this event isn’t just huge it’s enormous. Well they got fandom buzzing with excitement as expectations mount so what could possibly be the premise for this? And will The Beyonder be involved?

Secret Wars

During an interview with USA today Executive Editor Tom Brevoot had this to say.

The scope of it is about the biggest thing we’ve ever done or attempted to do. It’s may be not the best thing to say but I don’t know how we’ll top it a year later. But we are an experienced and crack fighting storytelling team. It really is a game-changer in as major a way as you can imagine

Marvel also released a teaser picture by Alex Ross depicting a pitched battle between some of the combatants involved. you may notice that it shows the current crop of heroes such as Falcon-Cap, Female Thor and Miles Morales in a battle against their classic counter-parts. Although there is no sign of the X-Men or Fantastic Four.

Back in 1985 the  Secret Wars was a massive success. The story of how The Beyonder plucked Marvel‘s greatest and baddest to combat on the specially created battleworld spawned all kinds of merchandise spin-off’s and action figures while still being well regarded today. It was where Spider-Man picked up the alien symbiote that later bonded with Eddie Brock to create Venom. From the released picture it seems there won’t be any revelations like that this time. but we’ll see.

It seems like this move is the start of something bigger, maybe a movie? Tom Brevoort certainly has high hopes for this.

Our hope is that as seismic as the original Secret Wars was to the Marvel Universe and the readers, this new Secret Wars will be to the readers of today. People are certainly going to be talking about it 30 years from now
