Jupiter’s Legacy #1 Review

Is this highly anticipated title worthy of both your money and time?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Image:

The comic-book event of 2013 finally arrives as superstar creators MARK MILLAR and FRANK QUITELY give us the superhero epic that all future comics will be measured by. The world’s greatest heroes have grown old and their legacy is a poisonous one to the children who will never live up to their remarkable parents. Unmissable.

I was absolutely excited when I found out that this series was coming down the proverbial pipeline.  The concept sounded intriguing and the reunion of this team instantly peaked my interest and in the end I’m still excited about it.

Mark Millar pens the script and the writer once again proves his literary prowess but much to the author’s detriment a lot of the ground covered here feels like retreaded paths that other stories have touched on. The characterizations are fully formed and from this point on there’s enough done to each individual to germinate some plot threads as this start in general is sure to move things forward.  But as it stands right now I found myself a tad bit underwhelmed by the content as the individual parts themselves were fine, but not great by any stretch of the imagination.

The art by Frank Quitely is the rock that holds this entire concept together.  His quirky design sense easily brings life to the narrative while creating a wide range of superheroes in the process.  There are certainly going to be detractors that find his unique sensibilities off putting but for me he’s easily one of the best working artists in the industry, so as you can imagine I have zero complaints about the work done here within the pages of this burgeoning title.

Ultimately Jupiter’s Legacy #1 is a victim of preconceived expectations as the creative team delivers something that is a bit bloated but nonetheless worthwhile in many aspects.  There’s certainly a lot of promise here as this concept barrels forward and for that reason this title squeaks by with a light recommendation.
