Jinnrise #3 Review

We’ve reached the third act of this mini-series, but is this alien invasion still worth your time?  Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

Saved from interstellar forces, student Andrew Marcus’ fate rests in the hands of Yunus…a boy in control of a living “myth”: a Jinn (Genie). But can a single Jinn stand against these invaders…led by their greatest warrior, Lahasad-Brim? The answer might depend on a wildcard: a mysterious stranger who might be friend…or foe.

With an issue that takes a break from the main narrative, I can safely say that this hugely entertaining and very original piece of fiction continues to be a worthwhile treat.  What we get is a thought provoking jaunt that asks a very tough question that has been pondered about and queried from generation to generation: are we more than the sum of ourselves? The creative team doesn’t attempt to answer it but instead offers up some narrative nuggets for their audience to ponder.

Tom Taylor takes the literary reigns in this outing, as the writer hands in an outstanding job for what I assume will be necessary back story for the greatest warrior of the Kibrani, Lahasad-Brim.  It’s a tale of introspection and ultimately the way of strength, as our antagonist comes face to face with a question that has been haunting him.  The dialogue contained her flows nicely though there may be a bit too much verbal retort with regard to the ultimate climax of the piece, but from start to finish I was thoroughly entertained.

The art by Mark Torres fits the narrative quite perfectly here.  His pencil strokes yield what can only be described as a strikingly competent visual dance that’s completely chaotic and yet natural at the exact same time.  From the first page to the final panel this talent delivers on every possible level as we see these aliens participate in what could be considered a successful invasion.

Jinnrise #3 is a bit of a break from the accepted form of the series but it mines enough new territory to keep things moving forward.  Recommended.
