Jennifer Blood #27 Review

With a new author at the helm, has the story featuring this violent protagonist lost its proverbial spark?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Jennifer Blood doesn’t like being in prison, no more than she likes being the puppet of someone she’s never met. But for now, she’s willing to follow their instructions.

Because if all goes according to plan, she won’t be a prisoner much longer…

As dedicated readers know, our chief character has been through the wringer in an attempt to adjust or even escape her extended prison sentence.  In many ways she’s gotten exactly what she deserves but nonetheless the creative team finds a way to make you feel attached to her struggle even as she does some rather questionable things for the sake of freedom.

Mike Carroll pens the script and after such a short stint he’s clearly gained a profound grasp on the lead.  Granted in this outing this is more about her going into action and executing pieces of a plan than any true development, but nonetheless little nuggets of concrete character evolution drop here and there.  These brief instances illuminate not just her current set of goals but her journey from the person she was to the woman she’s slowly becoming.  As a whole I was impressed by the content here, but it was still over far too quickly and ultimately left me wanting more.

The brilliant work of Eman Casallos continues here, as the artist effortlessly illustrates this visual heavy jaunt.  There’s no shirking responsibility here, as the talent picks up his pencil and brilliantly brings this world to visceral life on several fascinating levels.  Whether he’s drawing Jennifer Blood beating her way out of  a situation or the preparation she takes before dealing with a direct conflict, this more than capable illustrator is certainly up to the task at hand.

When looking upon Jennifer Blood #27, reflect and remember that this quick read is the means to an end and at this point we have absolutely no idea where it’s going. But it’s been fun thus far.  Recommended.
