Invincible #91 Review

Invincible is the face of Image. It’s usually the fan favorite when you go online. Image has a few superhero-themed comics, this is one of them. I like how ‘open’ it is. Ninety issues down, yet this one you can jump in without having any knowledge of the previous issues. Fun and light-toned? Yes. The characters are diverse snd the story is interesting. It is a bit confusing whether you’re supposed to take this story seriously or not, there’s a comedy undertone. With better writing, this issue could have gone places.

The official description from Image:

The new Invincible will not back down, will not give in, and he is not going to play nice. What happens when Mark Grayson isn’t happy with his replacement? All this and… What exactly happened between Robot and Monster Girl in the Flaxan Dimension?

The tone and characters reminded me of Super Dinosaur. The latter is a far superior series so far from what I’ve read however. The problem here is some of the characters. The writing could be better. The dialogue given to Dinosaurus leaves much to be desired. Invincible (or rather his replacement) definitely has some deep character here. His scenes with his (I presume) wife ranks with the most emotion in the comic. Besides that, the dialogue is alright, a little on the generic side.

The art is……not that great. I think it might be a little TOO simplistic. Dinosaurus could have looked great with some more detail. The actual story is interesting enough to keep the reader invested. It does feel a bit like a placeholder though. But by the final shocking page, you’re ready for the next issue. (Seriously, that final page is gross-out creepy.)

Overall, Invincible #91 isn’t bad. It’s not great, but readable. It features some interesting character dynamics with some fun action to boot. There are of course many other better titles from Image currently on the stands than this, the writing here really could be better. Alas, it does keep you interested until the final creepy page, so it’s still a good comic.
