Hardcore #1 Review

Robert Kirkman gets around, the biggest name in Image Comics. The Walking Dead, Invincible, among others. Now he’s here with the start of a new series. Hardcore is a story that is serious, but at the same time, doesn’t have a dark tone. It’s a science fiction thriller similar to films such as Source Code. This new #1 has a very unique premise and is a comic you should be picking up.

The official description from Image:

From the creative minds of Image partners Robert Kirkman & Marc Silvestri! Once the hard core is shot into the back of your neck, an assassin’s brain waves can be transmitted into your body–circumventing your brain functions–taking complete control of your body. When assassins use this technology–your killer can be anyone; your barber, your neighbor or your wife. They are the best assassins in the world–but what happens when one of their own turns against them? Who can you trust when your enemy can change his appearance as easy as someone changes a shirt?

What I like about this comic is that it introduces a concept, (the Hardcore bullet) then by the end, everything changes. Our main character is Drake, likable guy. When reading, it appears that this will be episodic with the antagonist changing every time….but nope. I can’t really say who he/she is, it’s a major spoiler. This antagonist is well-written, his motives and backstory makes sense.

The art is good. Maybe not that dynamic, but the detail is good enough. The writing here is very good, and sometimes humorous. Drake is a fun guy to read, especially his reactions when fusing with other people.

Overall, a good start to what looks to be another great series from Image. The premise and concepts is interesting and the writing will keep you entertained. I recommended checking out this new series, you won’t be disappointed.
