Hack/Slash #19 Review

The costs and burdens facing the characters in this series come into play in this latest issue, but should you even care?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Image:

Slashers, by their very nature, are hard to keep in their graves, and sometimes putting them there over and over again tests even the resolve of Cassie and Vlad. HOAX HUNTERS creators MICHAEL MORECI and STEVE SEELEY join fan-favorite artist EMILIO LAISO to tell a dark tale of the price slasher-hunters must sometime pay to take down their prey.

I’m not going the beat around the bush, when I started reviewing Hack/Slash for Unleash The Fanboy the comic book series came off as a fun but story-thin romp with monsters.  This issue however had the right narrative balance to push this tale forward in a direction that offered a competent read that’s sure to please both current and potential future fans.

Steve Seeley and Michael Moreci simply hit the script out of the park as they allow both our heroes to deal with a complicated situation that ends with some sobering reflections.  This jaunt may ultimately be more about our two main characters than the monster they’re facing, as their individual journeys lead them to some uncomfortable but honest realizations.  Beneath all that though is the same Cassie Hack and Vlad fun that fans come to expect, just consider the added depth an additional bonus.

Emilio Laiso does a solid job on the art.  Offering up competent designs and well put together panels that give life to this vibrant battle against a monster that just won’t stay dead.  He handles both the slower scenes and the action packed ones with a level of professionalism that yields a visceral visual experience.  That said however, there were a few moments that came off a bit rushed.

Hack/Slash #19 is a competent and strong release that has enough spunk and soul, that it might just attract new fans.  Recommended.
