Guardians of the Galaxy #7 Review

Guardians of the Galaxy (Comic) Banner

Have our heroes bit off more than they can chew?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Marvel:

With the mysterious Angela now on the team and the massive effects of Infinity beginning to rise, the galaxy’s most mismatched heroes find themselves at a crossroads.

Guardians of the Galaxy 7_CThe creative team has seen fit to use what was done in Age of Ultron to bring forth a character that never existed in this universe.  We all know the lasting impact of that event has shaken things loose, birthing the right landscape for this and through that we’re actually given a tale that acts as a sturdy introduction to a wayward player.  Sure there are off moments for this angel but for the most part these did little to hinder the narrative path.

Brian Michael Bendis with Neil Gaiman acting as a consultant, delivers another fun script that successfully brings this arc to a close.  This portion is a dialogue entry, that properly highlights the members of this team while explaining the appearance of Angela in a way that allows her to fit with these players.  The scribe uses Star-Lord to show the power of this addition, while allowing some seeds of potential distrust to fester among the crew. Revelations lead to some uneasy feelings that are sure to spill over during or after Infinity, but with that said I found the overall jaunt to be rather light in depth.

The art by Sara Pichelli and Valerio Schiti is a triumph, as the duo works together to birth something that sticks out a bit from the usual comic book affair.  Using a high level of detail, on a diverse cast, both talents build enough visual meat to make the whole of this release worthy of purchase.  Perhaps the best compliment to be paid is the fact that the transitions between the two only had slight fluctuations, as the overall quality was successfully maintained.  In short: the illustrations were indeed excellent.

Guardians of the Galaxy #7 may lack narrative depth but it absolutely delivers an engaging and sturdy adventure that’s sure to please.  Recommended.
