Guardians of the Galaxy #10 Review

Guardians of the Galaxy 2014 Banner

Is there enough juice left in the cosmic books to hold onto an audience?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Marvel:

• Angela and Gamora go hunting.

• Special guest artist Kevin Maguire (Justice League, Batman Confidential, X-Men)

Guardians of the Galaxy 10_CSince the launch of this new volume I’ve been enamored with the amount of fun and fluidity each talent has brought to this saga.  There are some inconsistent bits but it’s never enough to prevent me from grinning ear to ear as I follow this motley crew on an intergalactic trek.  In short: the costumes and players change but these are the Guardians of the Galaxy.

When the House of Ideas first announced that Angela was going to be coming to their universe I had absolutely no idea how that could even work.  But thanks to a clever writer I can say I see some serious potential from her inclusion.  That’s what we get this issue as Brian Michael Bendis shows us what can be without sullying the fun of another romp on a distant world.  He knows both of these female characters well enough to let them play off of each other as they head into the fray against some Thanos related allies.  There’s not a whole lot of depth here, but there were some some potential nuggets of information that made the whole adventure more important than I was honestly expecting.

The art by Kevin Maguire is clean and crisp, as his skillful hand touches each character just enough to, for the most part, deliver consistent actions and emotions. There were a couple minor instances where I felt his style was a tad bit off to what the text called for but these were few and far between.  From the first panel to the final image there’s a lot to love, I especially liked seeing Gamora let loose on a rather large baddie, as her ferocity came out in all the best ways possible.

Guardians of the Galaxy #10 may not raise the bar for monthly books but it is quality entertainment that earns a recommendation from me.
