Grimm Universe #4 Review

Are you ready to learn the beginnings of the most despised character in the Grimm Universe?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Zenescope:

The full ORIGIN of The Dark One, is finally revealed here!  Before the war between the council of the realms, and the Dark Horde, before the Dark One set out to conquer the nexus, there was the warlord Malec.  The son of a king captured and forced into slavery until he escaped his captors.  Malec would raise up an army whose brutality would know no match as his path of vengeance and revenge swept across the land of Myst…a path that would end with the creation of the most evil being in the Grimm Universe…The Dark One.  This is the one issue of the year YOU CANNOT MISS!!!

When it comes to explaining the origin of a key antagonist there are many pitfalls that can befall a franchise.  Simply put great care must be taken in order to avoid them and thankfully this issue does just that.

Anthony Spay handles the script as he weaves a simple but truthful tale of vengeance and how it corrupts even the truest leaders.  From beginning to end the author doesn’t try to just excuse the monster, but instead offers up events that give context to ruthlessness.  Much to the journey’s detriment the pacing is far too quick, leaving many of the key moments underdeveloped.  The end result is a good but not great work.

Matias Bergara lends his pencil as he expertly handles the art duties for this jaunt. There was literally no other choice for this role other than this man as the talent from the get-go takes the audience on a captivating ride that helps to weave this odyssey. From a visual stand point there are some drawbacks but for the most part the illustrator delivers solid renditions of both the world and characters therein.

Grimm Universe #4 does exactly what it sets out to do but there are some stumbles along the way.  But nonetheless it’s still entertaining and more than worth your time. Recommended.
