Grimm Universe #3 Review

Is this trip through the extended history of the Grimm Fairy Tales universe actually worth your money and time?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Zenescope:

Before Grimm Fairy Tales, before Bad Girls, before the Goblin Queen…there was Olivia. When a town in Myst comes under attack by the vicious forces of the evil Goblin King, a sole survivor will be forced to resort to the most extreme of means to get her revenge against those responsible for destroying her life. But by embracing the evil, will she become even worse than those who ruined her life? Or will she overcome the darkness and find her way back to the light? Don’t miss out on the origin of one of the most evil villains in the Grimm Fairy Tales universe! The Goblin Queen!

It’s not a completely original idea to take a villain that’s been despised and humanize them by offering some sort of emotional back story.  But on occasion this type of narrative is handled in a way that feels far more genuine than people might expect.

The script by Dave Franchini and Raven Gregory is simple but it tells a solidly built story that makes logical and coherent sense.  Too often with tales of this style the mistake is made that the villain needs just one pivotal moment to go from good to evil, in this jaunt’s case there are several that all contribute to a final step into the shadows.  There were times where the bulk of this adventure felt a tad bit forced but what saved it from being too heavy handed was the smart and consistent dialogue.

Amin Amat handles the art and the characters along with the world they inhabit simply look great.  Each pencil stroke succeeds in highlighting just enough detail to establish authenticity and form as our villain goes forth on her path to darkness. There were a few instances where panels seemed somewhat lightly rendered but these were few and far between.

Grimm Universe #3 is another good entry that’s sure to please devoted fans of this franchise. Recommended.
