Too often events feel like afterthoughts that exist only to milk a dedicated audience out of their hard-earned cash, but devoted followers of the Grimm titles can rest assured that this feels like something that will be worthwhile in the end.

Pat Shand pens the script, and the author wastes no time showing off this new villain.  We see evil rise, good fall, all while a rising list of casualties should give readers pause.  If there is a core strength, it’s the pacing of the tale.  As a good deal of text is delivered in a way that doesn’t slow down the experience.  In short the scribe seamlessly builds toward future confrontations between both our heroes and villains as this nightmarish landscape takes hold.

Carlos Paul, Jacob Bear and Miguel Mendonca work together to deliver a solidly rendered set of illustrations. The visual aspects found here work in concert with the script in order to deliver some potent sequences.   There were a few illustrations that didn’t seem up to the same level of detail as the rest but they did little to detract from the overall quality on display.

Grimm Fairy Tales Unleashed #1 continues this event in style.  Recommended.
