Grimm Fairy Tales Unleashed #0 Review

An event for the Grimm universe begins here, but is this a good start?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Zenescope:

The four realms have been witness to great evil over the centuries — The Dark One, The Dream Eater and Helios to name a few. But none have threatened existence as we know it as much as THE BEING. Who or what is he? What does he want and how do the answers tie into the origins of Sela Mathers and the four hunters who banished a legion of monsters centuries ago? The prelude to Zenescope’s Grimm event of the year begins now!

As any comic fan know we’ve all had to deal with companies attempting to deliver a grand sweeping story that unites their heroes and villain against a common foe or divides them in a way that will affect tales for years to come.  We’re getting the former here and fans can rest assured, this creative team starts things off on the right foot.

Pat Shand spends the majority of the script introducing the audience to this saga’s singular antagonist, a creature known simply as the Being. With his coming this brand new threat offers an aura of foreboding, as this issue yields a text heavy affair with some minor pacing issues.  However each word and syllable that this monster utters displays a calm demeanor that sets fear in the eyes of those he deals with and smartly the author  has chosen to begin his reign of terror with some familiar and villainous faces.

From the first page to the final panel the interior work by Nei Ruffino is exceptional. As each pencil strokes offer renditions of this universe that are both detailed and well structured.  There are however a few brief moments where faces looked a tad bit underutilized and movements seem too stiff.  But these instances do little to detracts from the overall audience experience, especially when we witness a grand battle involving some prominent heroes.

Grimm Fairy Tales Unleashed #0 is a very good beginning to what should be an excellent event.  Recommended.
