GRIMM #1 Review

Based on the TV show of the same name, Dynamite unleashes GRIMM upon the world. Does this first issue warrant future buys? It’s definitely one of the most fun comics I’ve read in awhile.

Here’s the official description from Dynamite:

Set in the world of the acclaimed NBC series, Grimm, Homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt of the Portland Police Bureau learns he is descended from a line of guardians known as “Grimms,” charged with keeping balance between humanity and the mythological creatures called “Wesen.” Beginning this issue, Kelly (Nick’s mom) begins her quest to destroy the Coins of Zakynthos.

It’s fair to first say that I’ve never seen GRIMM. I’ve heard about it, but only vaguely. So I was jumping into this series fresh with almost no knowledge of what to expect. The story is ‘grim’ you could say, but never becomes ‘gritty.’ Like Dynamite’s Pathfinder, it has a very fun and enjoyable tone. Sure, the writing is questionable sometimes, but overall if this is what the show is like, I think I’m going to have to check it out.

Marc Gaffen and Kyle Mcvey pen the script, and it’s pretty solid for the most part. The opening with ‘Captain Awesome’ was pretty questionable, but after that it becomes solid. The main character is Nick Burkhardt, a Grimm. His narration carries the story well. The story is (so far) not too complex to grasp. At its core it’s about these three golden coins that grants a person power. I really like how the writers use history as a backdrop in the flashback about them. Apparently Caesar and Alexander the Great had possession of them. It’s a truly insightful backdrop. The pacing is great and something you’d expect for a first issue. The story is established nicely with the characters introduced and some fun action.

The art by Jose Malaga is good, there really aren’t many complaints to be had. The very first panel with the creepy figure in the background already successfully captivated the look of this ‘grim’ story. The action comes alive later in the issue, and the Wesen look fierce. The always amazing Alex Ross does the cover, stunning as always. The photo subscription variant is definitely something fans of the show will enjoy.

Overall, GRIMM #1 is a fine opening comic. Non-watchers of the show shouldn’t hesitate to jump in. It’s a fun fantasy with a good protagonist and story. And who knows, you might even want to check out the show after reading.
