Green Hornet: Legacy #37 Review

A new villain and the un-dead rise in the latest issue of Green Hornet. Does it deliver a solid story? It’s definitely one of the more random installments yet.

Here’s the official description from Dynamite:

The worst blizzard in fifty years has Century City snowed in. Little food, no power, and deadly weather would be bad enough for the scared citizens, but an army of undead creatures stalking the streets makes things worse. Can the emerald insect save the city when he’s a dead man himself? Can the Green Hornet rise again, or will he be dragged back into the grave? Undead action by Jai Nitz and Jethro Morales!

If you’ve ever seen the original Green Hornet series, you would know it never strayed away from realism. That’s what the Hornet is all about, a street fighter in a gritty city. It however doesn’t hurt to have to some unrealistic things sometimes, case in point here where the Hornet takes on zombies. It’s outrageous to see the walking dead closing in on the title character, but that’s what makes this issue so awesome.

Jai Nitz crafts a rather interesting story. It feels rather filler-ish, but nonetheless a fun read. It opens up with Britt defending himself against the hooker-turned-zombie Jasmine from the last issue. Then he soon sees there’s quite a few zombies strolling around. But questions remains…where are these undead coming from? The answer is Doctor Creepy, the new antagonist. He has a pretty decent backstory, I look forward to seeing what he brings to the table. What I personally like is how Britt mentions his father, the original Green Hornet. That hasn’t been talked about in awhile, great for new readers coming aboard. (The best line is when he says “Hard to believe my dad and Kato used to run everything out of this old garage.“)

Jethro Morale’s art really shines this time around. There’s great detail, and the action is appropriately gritty. I dare say this is his best work I’ve seen on the title. The zombies look alright, could have been creepier, but it’s sufficient. The cover is something fans of the un-dead will get a kick out of. I’m really interested in a zombified Green Hornet now.

Overall, a rather random but fun installment in Green Hornet: Legacy. The main thing accomplished is the debut of Doctor Creepy, who hopefully will be an actual memorable antagonist. If you’re looking for a less traditional Hornet story, (basically the opposite of Mark Waid’s current run) you should hop aboard Legacy.
