Green Hornet: Legacy #34 Review

Green Hornet 2.0 meets up with the original in this very interesting issue. Does it deliver a story the epic cover would have you believe?

Here’s the official description from Dynamite:

Welcome to Century City, the home of the Green Hornet! The new Green Hornet has the support of the police and City Hall and the people love him. Will that be enough to stop a terrorist group bent on detonating a dirty bomb? The new Green Hornet may need a new partner!

Not too long ago this title took a drastic turn. Britt Reid was supposedly dead and Scowl took on the mantle, with a very cool armor to boot. In this issue Reid returns. I can’t say I’m too happy about it, because ironically when he left the book got better. Still, there’s no denying the great possibilities of having two Hornets in the same area. With some pretty interesting villains, this issue is definitely one of the better ones. And if you’ll notice, the title has been changed to ‘Legacy,’ probably because Dynamite wants Mark Waid’s Green Hornet to be the new definitive comic.

Jai Nitz crafts a rather intriguing story.  The villains aren’t as one-dimensional as you might think. The dialogue about 2.0 ‘breaking the rules’ was superb. However, the big thing is the return of Britt Reid. We do get to see where he’s been, which was good. I like his reactions to seeing what Central City has become. (One of his lines is also a homage to something from All-Star Batman, well played.) Yes, he does meet up with Scowl  The dialogue is interesting, it delivers and also teases what we’re going to see in the next issue. In just a few issues Scowl has proven to be a far more engaging Hornet than Britt, so it’ll be great to see where it goes.

Jethro Morales’ art actually improves slightly. There’s more detail to be found, and some really good splash panels. The action is very dynamic and engaging.  The cover is fantastic, one of the best from the series. Really, what can beat a fantastic shot of Hornet 2.0 and Britt Reid about to fight it out?

Overall, a very engaging issue of Green Hornet. It is admittedly good to see Britt Reid back, his dialogue and narration is great. 2.0 is still the best thing to happen to this series. With the last page, the next issue should be very interesting.
