GODZILLA: Rulers of Earth #7 Review

Rulers of Earth returns with another action-packed issue. While not achieving the perfect score of the previous one, it’s still a really fun comic. Jet Jaguar is back, man!

Here’s the official description from IDW:

Who or what, is Jet Jaguar? The size-changing robot has appeared mysteriously, but is he friend or foe?

As the alien attack on earth ramps up, Jet Jaguar holds the balance of power in his hands!

It’s a shame Rulers of Earth is most likely going to end at Issue #12. We’ve been getting great monster fights issue after issue. The previous one had Godzilla and M.O.G.U.E.R.A. take on alien monsters Gigan and Orga. The final page was exciting because it brought in everyone’s favorite multi-colored robot, Jet Jaguar. This guy appeared way back in the infamous Godzilla vs. Megalon, no one thought he would be making a return. Well, anything’s possible in comic land! You might be a bit annoyed with Godzilla’s portrayal, but Jet Jaguar and Gigan were both awesome.

Chris Mowry delivers some pretty interesting dialogue pieces. The first is the dialogue between the underwater Devonians and the other alien species. It should be interesting to see how this conflict plays out in coming issues. Also, Jet Jaguar is given some pretty interesting and ambiguous backstory. Let’s just say this origin makes a lot more sense than the randomly-programming-himself-to-turn-larger from the movie! Steven Woods is still a bit off. I know I’ve said this before, but I’m going to have to say it again. He’s acting and talking more like Boxer from Godzilla than the likable protagonist from Kingdom of Monsters. The fight is definitely solid, Gigan gets a lot of the props. Even while being manhandled by two monsters, he still manages to look impressive. It’s great to see the Final Wars design being put to good use!

Jet Jaguar is fantastic and steps right out of his movie. He has a strong sense of being a hero, which is made apparent by his human-like gestures to Godzilla. Those saying Jet Jaguar can’t translate into modern times are misinformed. Sadly, I didn’t particularly like Godzilla’s portrayal. He attacked Jet Jaguar for seemingly no reason after the two teamed up to take on Gigan. Matt Frank’s main cover is a solid piece depicting Jet Jaguar and a rather sinister looking Godzilla. The RI by Jeff Zornow is easily superior I gotta say, it’s just so dynamic and detailed. (Even if Godzilla’s pose is kinda off with Jet Jaguar’s punch.)

Overall, another fun issue of Godzilla. Steven Woods might not be that great of a focus since he’s reminding me too much of Boxer, but the action and story are good. The monsters have never looked so expressive, so hats off to Matt Frank. Jet Jaguar’s big appearance doesn’t disappoint, I can’t wait to see more of him. (And it looks like we’ll getting that in the next issue!) Volume 1 of this series just released too, so I recommend checking it out if you haven’t been reading the book!
