GODZILLA: Rulers of Earth #6 Review

Rulers of Earth is back. I hope you’re ready for some awesome alien monster action!

Here’s the official description from IDW:

The stakes have never been higher when an alien onslaught on Las Vegas reveals new weapons for both sides of the conflict! Meanwhile, Lucy has her own problems to deal with as two countries pit monster against monster, with her team caught in the middle.

Rulers of Earth has easily become the Godzilla series, right up there with The Half Century War. There’s very little to complain about, it’s just too darn fun. The previous issue was a deviation from the main plot. It was still very entertaining, even if I didn’t agree with Varan beating Rodan. This issue brings the main story back. We have Godzilla in Las Vegas battling Gigan and Orga. If that doesn’t make you excited, I don’t know what will.

Chris Mowry brings us another fantastic action-packed issue. The writing is engaging from the start. We have these aliens over at Area 51. Their goal? Release the Millennium, which Godzilla fans know as Orga’s ship form. The beginning focuses on that and the battle between Godzilla and Gigan. Surprisingly Godzilla is beaten around rather easily. M.O.G.U.E.R.A. pops in to help soon after. Obviously, all of this is especially exciting for the Godzilla fan. Before getting into the next awesome scenes, reflecting on the Area 51 breakout is important. The narration is fantastic, plus it showcases how malicious Gigan is. (The simple scene of him disintegrating some Area 51 workers stood out.)

M.O.G.U.E.R.A. is infamous for being a very weak robot. That’s cause unfortunately for him he’s only appeared in Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla where he got pummeled. So it would be interesting to see what Mowry was going to do with him. M.O.G.U.R.A. matches his on screen counterpart well, even pulling some cool attacks on Gigan. Orga has a very interesting role. Perhaps his most notable scene is when he grabbed M.O.G.U.E.R.A. with one hand. It might have looked a little exaggerated, but Godzilla fans will get a good laugh from it since it’s so funny and cool to see just how big Orga is compared to M.O.G.U.E.R.A. Also, Steven Woods returns and has probably the best line, describing Gigan as a “biker with machetes.” I think fans will be pleased with how great Final Wars Gigan is portrayed, he’s a lot more powerful than his movie incarnation.

Matt Frank returns on art duties. While it was good to see Jeff Zornow last time, this issue cements the fact that no artist can draw these monsters quite like Frank. There are so many standout shots, I personally like the one with Gigan roaring and about to slash M.O.G.U.E.R.A. There’s plenty of personality in every panel, which brings the already fun fights even more to life. The main cover by Frank is a great piece featuring headshots of Orga and Gigan with Godzilla and M.O.G.U.E.R.A. at the bottom, fantastic. Jeff Zornow’s RI is incredible, featuring an unfortunate M.O.G.U.E.R.A. getting ripped apart by Gigan and Orga with Godzilla in the background. You can’t go wrong with either cover.

Overall, this was a really great issue of Rulers of Earth. There’s some fantastic, even gritty monster action. Some fans were disappointed when Showa Gigan was replaced with his Milliemum design, but I can tell you that Final Wars Gigan doesn’t disappoint. He actually steals the spotlight from almost everyone! Orga is a welcome addition, and looks pretty cool throughout. With a great ending, it doesn’t look like Rulers of Earth will be slowing down anytime soon.

5/5
