God Hates Astronauts #3 Review

There are some titles that are just too difficult to describe, but that in no way makes them terrible. God Hates Astronauts #3 is one such example and it continues to be quirky, funny and a little awesome.

This issue does a great job of representing one of God Hates Astronauts biggest strenghts. This is a title that can go on random tangets and, in fact, thrives on them. While there is a greater story at work, all these side sections are often very appealling and full of the rich humor the title is quickly becoming known for. This isn’t something for serious readers, but is ideal for people who enjoy a good laugh or three.

Although it likes to spiral into random ideas, there is still very much a solid plot at work here. Ryan Browne manages to work the central plot in and, as God Hates Astronauts #3 demonstrates, some of these jumping off-points intertwine with the actual plot itself. Browne’s writing is refreshing, not least of all because it isn’t doing something by the numbers, or taking itself so seriously.

Visually, this issue continues to offer a fun, colorful romp that ties into the comic’s playful nature. Chris Burnham helps with the art duties, adding crisp pencils that help to define the cast. There is plenty of detail here, especially in small shots that you wouldn’t expect – the back of a ghost-cows head, for instance – that show a level of professional care has gone into this title. In terms of color, the bright and loud approach definately works well with the title and is a big part of the appeal for me; it instantly tells you you’re in a fun ride.

All in all, this is a fantastic third outing for the series. There’s definately some grander plan at work but, for now, I’m happy with the combination of charm, humor and artistic talent that’s being offered here.
