IDW’s Ghostbusters will be ending its run this upcoming September, but they’ll be back and ready to believe you this October with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That’s right a four issue limited series teaming up these beloved franchises will see its first issue this October from IDW. Tom Waltz and Erik Burnham will be sharing writing duties. Tom Waltz has written for both Ghostbusters and IDW’s sorely underrated TMNT series. Erik Burnham has written Ghostbusters for IDW from the beginning of its 20 issue run.
IDW is no stranger to crossovers and in February of 2014 began a five issue crossover entitled X-Files Conspiracy that saw the Lone Gunmen crossing paths with TMNT, Transformers, and Ghostbusters among others. While the series showed promise, it ultimately felt rushed and far too episodic to build beyond the novelty of seeing the Lone Gunmen popping up in other franchises. While there were some clever flourishes throughout the book never settled on a tone. This made this reader not really care at all about the larger mystery element linking all the books together.
I am far more optimistic for this crossover as each respective franchise has a sense of humor built into it, while allowing tension to be drawn from the well-established cast of characters. Many of us have been following the likes of Leonardo and Egon for decades. Tom Waltz’s involvement also brings promise as his TMNT credentials are beyond reproach at this point. If you don’t believe me go pick up IDW’s TMNT books.
PS, the amazing Banner Image is by Mr-Donkeygoat, more of his work can be found here.
