Ghostbusters #8 Review

Does this two part arc close out on a high note?  Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

The Ghostbusters have their hands full in this issue! Kylie, Peter, and Ray have boarded the John Milton to meet its restless captain — the stubborn spirit of a teenager who was lost at sea in the ship’s original sinking!

Our heroes were left in some rather precarious situations at the close of last month’s release. Thankfully they’re stuck with ghosts that seem pretty run of the mill, especially when considering everything that’s befallen this team.  The talented people behind this latest outing yield a fitting conclusion, that stumbles ever so slightly, as it sprints through a truly paranormal finish.

Erik Burnham pens the script and the scribe impresses by showcasing why he’s at the helm of the franchise.  From the situation in Las Vegas to the ghost ship, and even Dr. Egon Spengler’s self obsessive science experiments there’s a lot to enjoy here.  The comedy is firing on all cylinders as the author handily highlights each of our protagonists by giving mention toward the feature film that started this all.  The inclusion of some light but perceivable drama makes for an engaging adventure, that enables the strengths behind this verbal barrage.  It’s true that there were a few off moments that seemed bogged down by an overabundance of dialogue but that did little to hinder the overall affair.

Once again Evan “Doc” Shaner steps in to tackle the art.  The talent builds a coherent visual side to this journey, as panels and pages get the right amount of attention.  That being said some of his design choices left me a little uncomfortable with the final visualizations.  To the illustrator’s credit he handles the personification of each hero and spectral entity quite well but the work on display felt out of place for this franchise.  In short: his renditions were good but not my cup of tea.

Ghostbusters #8 is a solid comic book that successfully carries enough of the trademark wit and banter to lead the property toward a recommendation.
