Ghostbusters #1 Review

Can the new team muster up the gumption to fill the shoes of the classic squad? Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

The Ghostbusters are gone, spirited away by some dastardly demons from another dimension! But spectral shenanigans haven’t ceased in the city that never sleeps, meaning a new group will need to step up and don the proton packs. Will the New Ghostbusters be able to rescue their predecessors, or will they share the same fate? The Ghostbusters creative super-team of Erik Burnham and Dan Schoening return to bust out more ectoplasmic excitement in this all-new Ghostbusters ongoing volume!

These new Ghostbusters have come together and they are certainly going to be going through some serious growing pains for the foreseeable future.  But fans should take heart because the plucky spirit that made the previous volume such an uproariously fun read each and every month is still intact.

Series scribe Erik Burnham continues to spin his narrative yarns in this brand new volume, as he effortlessly removes one group of four and throws together another.  The dialogue for the most part is just as sharp as it ever was but there were a few instances where things seemed to be a bit underwhelming.  Maybe it was because we have this new bunch and the pace of the overall tale felt rushed as it charged toward its cliffhanger finish but something in the structure just felt off.  But it was still a fun read.

The art by Dan Schoening continues to be exactly what these paranormal investigators and eliminators have been missing.  He effortlessly realizes natural designs incorporated from the movie while creating some of his own. , His concentrated pencil strokes evolve and extenuate the written word into a believable interpretation of the source material while paving the way for something wholly original.

Ghostbusters #1 is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination and since it’s the beginning of a new status quo fans will need time to get used to it.  But the talent behind it more than make a solid case for it.  Recommended.
