Finally Kid Comics!: DC Entertainment Launches the DC COMICS FAN FAMILY Website

Today, DC Entertainment launched the DC Comics Fan Family website to share family-friendly content based on DC’s iconic superheroes. The website lists kid-friendly releases, as well as free comics available on the DC Nation App.

It will also feature fun DIY craft projects, comic themed activity sheets, and even recipes for super hero themed food. Diane Nelson, president of DC Entertainment says it is the “perfect destination for parents to discover new ways to interact with their favorite Super Heroes – from building a Batman jetpack to cooking a Green Lantern-themed breakfast.” I have such warm and fuzzy feelings thinking about momma and poppa fanboys and fangirls sharing their love of comics with their little super-kiddos.

As an educator of elementary school children, I see comics as one of the greatest tools I have to help teach them. Comics can be used to spread literacy and are the modern-day myths we can apply to teach life lessons, morals and values. Although comic-based movies and cartoons do a great job targeting kids, the comics fall short at doing so. Most of my kids are obsessed with The Avengers, Spiderman, Superman and Batman, yet we have so few comics marketed towards their age group. I use comics to teach social skills and values, but because there is so little good curriculum about comic books, I have to create it all on my own. So why are we missing this opportunity to target this demographic and help them realize their great powers? Most of my kids would like to learn from Spiderman, but instead, are taught values from reality tv.

To launch the DC Comics Fan Family website, DC has announced a contest in which kids can write about the real superheroes in their lives. The grand-prize winner receives a trip for four to the Warner Brother’s studios and their hero gets $2,500 to donate to a charity of their choice. Thank you, DC! You have made this educator very happy.
