EXCLUSIVE: Josh Henaman talks BIGFOOT – SWORD OF THE EARTHMAN

While attending this year’s Amazing Arizona Comic Con I was able to sit down with creator Josh Henaman and discuss his title Bigfoot – Sword of the Earthman.

UTF: So where did the inspiration for Bigfoot – Sword of the Earthman come from?

Bigfoot Epic PoseJosh Henaman: The inspiration actually came from a NASA photo. Back in 2007, the Spirit rover actually photographed what looked like Bigfoot on Mars. So the media latched onto it. So if you Google that image, you can see it and from there that’s how I got the idea. Then I started thinking, how did he get there? And then it just evolved into a Conan the Barbarian meets Flash Gordon kind of thing.

UTF: When you first started to craft this world, how did you find someone to capture the visual side of the equation?

Bigfoot CoverJosh Henaman: Well, I wrote the first six issues first before I even tried to find an artist. And then I knew I wanted somebody with a little quirky kind of style. What I was looking for is kind of like Mike Mignola. I needed somebody who kind of had that kind of vibe. So, I put down an ad through the various sites and eventually I found my artist, Andy Taylor.

UTF: And for the illustrator, Andy Taylor, is this his first original book or did he have a history in the industry already?

Josh Henaman: He has done a couple of anthologies, but this was his first long form kind of book.

UTF: All right. So, you said it was Conan the Barbarian meets Flash Gordon. I got to tell you that tickles my fancy. Could you tell us a little bit more about Bigfoot as a main character?

Bigfood with a broadswordJosh Henaman: First off he’s mute. He does not talk throughout the whole thing. So, I knew going into that I would have an uphill battle to try to convey emotion and the world around him. So he was a character that kind of does the same thing, but, I mean, in the very opening of the book I described Bigfoot as Lover of women, Destroyer of men.

UTF: Well, it definitely sounds interesting. So if you were to pitch this comic to the average consumer what would you say?

Josh Henaman: It’s Bigfoot with a Broadsword.

I want to take the time to thank Mr. Josh Henaman for chatting with me. It was a real pleasure to speak with him and I can say this is without a doubt an original property that’s more than worth owning.

So what did you think of the interview my fellow fanboys and fangirls?
