Eternal Warrior #1 Review

Eternal Warrior, the much anticipated new title from Valiant finally hits comic book shelves but has it been worth the wait?

Official description from VALIANT:
New York Times best-selling writer Greg Pak (Planet Hulk, Batman/Superman) and superstar artist Trevor Hairsine (X-O Manowar, X-Men: Deadly Genesis) launch a brand new campaign for Valiant’s undying immortal champion, the Eternal Warrior, in an all-new monthly series!

The simple answer is yes! Eternal Warrior is a very good book and packs a punch to boot. Greg Pak has written a true warrior’s tale with all the blood, guts, mythology and valor one would wish for in a story of an immortal, a warrior and a leader. Gilad Anni-Padda protects the earth as the Fist and Steel and spares the innocent but is a fierce and selfless as he leads his soldiers into battle against the forces of the Lord of Darkness, Negral. The enemies forces are mindless killers who stop at nothing to destroy any and all who oppose them.

Gilad also has two children Mitu and Xaran who both wish to fight but with different motives one of which Gilad is extremely fearful follows to closely in his footsteps. The battle is brutal but what Gilad must face in the end is even more deadly and unstoppable than himself. Pak uses the mythology of Gilad and cleverly added a very human and familial bond to complicate and finally drive Gilad away from the life of a warrior. Pak maneuvers through myth, legend, duty and honor with great ease making Gilad a complex and deeply flawed character which also makes him a great character.

Artist Trevor Hairsine brings a rough, gritty edge to the mix and it’s a terrific compliment to Pak’s writing. His loose pencil work helps define the chaos and confusion of battle and the darkness of betrayal which will ultimately follow. It feels like he’s enjoying his work as well since it comes through on the pages in action and pacing.

This is another step forward for Valiant as they bring back the Eternal Warrior to their ever growing reassurance in comics. This story was far more intense and heart-breaking than I had anticipated but thoroughly enjoyed. This issue focused more on Gilad’s human qualities more so than his immortality and it sets the right tone for this character. Eternal Warrior is off to a great start. It’s complex, action packed and most importantly entertaining. Another great Valiant title with a ton of potential. My highest recommendation.
